Encouraging care & compassion
We believe that the healing journey for many parents can begin as early as when death occurs. So the earlier their experience of good support, the more helpful it will be for their healing journey going forward. In light of this, we have approached many hospitals to allow us to speak to their professionals so that we can share our real life experiences with them and show them how best to support bereaved families and encourage them to be compassionate towards us.
Our aim is to show how healthcare professionals need not always be ‘clinical’ about their communication or afraid to deliver bad news to parents, that they can and should show compassion and simple humanity. We hope to demonstrate how effortless it can be to offer a comforting word or a simple gesture of care. And how it makes all the difference to the parents in their sorrow.
Our talks are about 60 to 90 min depending on whether specific topics are required (eg prenatal issues) and cover personal stories as well as how frontline staff play an important role in the healing journey of a bereaved parent. We give practical information on what to say and how to cope with grief. Our CBSS Handout is easy to follow and use. Our audiences have included doctors, nurses, medical students, nursing students and healthcare workers from NUH, KKH, Thomson Medical, Gleneagles, Lee Kong Chien Medical School, and the Ngee Ann and Nanyang Polytechnics Nursing programmes.
